ABSTRACT

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of different firing protocols on the surface roughness and flexural strength of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LD) after aging methods. Forty-two LD bars of 16 x 4 x 2 mm (IPS e-max CAD, Ivoclar) were randomly separated into two groups according to firing protocols: Single firing-Staining, glazing, and crystallization in a single step; Multiple firings-Crystallization+First staining+Firing+Second staining+Firing+Glazing+Firing. After protocols, initial surface roughness readings were taken (Surfcorder SE1700, Kosakalab). Samples were then randomly separated into three groups (n=7) according to the aging methods they were submitted: Thermomechanical cycling (TMC, ER System, Erios, 1,200,000 cycles, 0.3 MPa, 2 Hz and 5°C/37°C/55°C, 30 s swell time); Simulated toothbrushing (STB, Pepsodent, MAVTEC, 73,000 cycles), and Control (no aging). Final surface roughness readings were done, and samples were submitted to a three-point bending test (OM100, Odeme Dental Research) and fractographic analysis by scanning electron microscopy (EVO-MA10, ZEISS). Data were analyzed (2-way ANOVA, (α=.05). There was no difference (p>.05) in the flexural strength between the firing protocols, regardless of the aging method. STB decreased the flexural strength of samples submitted to multiple firings, different from control (p<.05). Without aging (Control), before TMC, and after STB, LD had lower surface roughness when submitted to multiple firings than to single firing (p<.05). The firing protocols did not affect the flexural strength or the surface roughness of the lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, even after aging. However, toothbrushing negatively affected the flexural strength and smoothed the surface of the ceramic submitted to multiple firings.


Resumo Este estudo avaliou o efeito de diferentes protocolos de queima na rugosidade de superfície e resistência à flexão de uma cerâmica vítrea de dissilicato de lítio (DL) para CAD/CAM, após métodos de envelhecimento. Quarenta e dois barras de DL (IPS e-max CAD, Ivoclar) de 16 x 4 x 2 mm foram separadas aleatoriamente em dois grupos de acordo com os protocolos de queima: Single firing-Pigmentação, glazeamento e cristalização em única etapa. Multiple firings-Cristalização+Primeira camada do pigmento+Queima+Segunda camada do pigmento+Queima+Glazeamento+Queima. Após os protocolos, foram realizadas leituras iniciais de rugosidade de superfície (Surfcorder SE1700, Kosakalab). As amostras foram então separadas aleatoriamente em três grupos (n=7) segundo o método de envelhecimento a que foram submetidas: Ciclagem termomecânica (CTM, Sistema ER, Erios, 1.200.000 ciclos, 0.3 MPa, 2 Hz e 5°C/37°C/55°C, 30 s de imersão), Escovação simulada (ES, Pepsodent, MAVTEC, 73.000 ciclos) e Controle (sem envelhecimento). Leituras finais de rugosidade foram realizadas, e as amostras foram submetidas ao ensaio de resistência à flexão em três pontos (OM100, Odeme Dental Research) e à análise fractográfica por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (EVO-MA10, ZEISS). Os dados foram analisados (ANOVA de dois fatores, (α=.05). Não houve diferença (p>.05) na resistência à flexão entre os protocolos de queima, independente do envelhecimento. ES diminuiu a resistência à flexão das amostras submetidas a multiple firings, diferente do controle (p<.05). Sem envelhecimento (Controle), antes da CTM e após ES, LD apresentou menor rugosidade de superfície quando submetido a multiple firings do que a single firing (p<.05). Os protocolos de queima não afetaram a resistência à flexão nem a rugosidade de superfície da cerâmica vítrea de dissilicato de lítio, mesmo após envelhecimento. No entanto, a escovação afetou negativamente a resistência à flexão e poliu a superfície da cerâmica submetida a multiple firings.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the whitening and abrasion effects of dentifrices containing different whitening agents on artificially stained and unstained enamel. 160 human dental enamel discs were distributed into four groups according to the type of dentifrices applied on them (n=40): Group I, non-whitening dentifrice (control group); Group II, dentifrice containing charcoal; Group III, dentifrice containing blue covarine; Group IV, dentifrice containing hydrogen peroxide. Half of the specimens in each group were immersed in coffee solution. Color measurements were evaluated from stained and unstained specimens before and after brushing by a spectrophotometer. The surface roughness of each unstained specimen was analyzed using a profilometer after the brushing and bleaching. The surface of one randomly selected specimen from each group was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistical analysis of the color change was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The one-way ANOVA was used to evaluate surface roughness. Group III provided significantly higher recovery on ΔE00 values than other groups on the unstained enamel (p<0.05). Group IV showed significantly the highest ΔE00 values on stained enamel (p<0.05) and also Group IV showed the highest surface roughness values (p<0.05), SEM revealed a more irregular surface in groups III and IV. It can be stated that dentifrice containing blue covarine is both an effective and a safe way to provide whiter teeth with routine home tooth brushing.


El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los efectos de blanqueamiento y abrasión de los dentífricos que contienen diferentes agentes blanqueadores en el esmalte teñido y no teñido artificialmente. Se distribuyeron 160 discos de esmalte dental humano en cuatro grupos según el tipo de dentífrico aplicado sobre ellos (n=40): Grupo I, dentífrico no blanqueador (grupo control); Grupo II, dentífrico que contiene carbón vegetal; Grupo III, dentífrico que contiene azul; Grupo IV, dentífrico que contiene peróxido de hidrógeno. La mitad de los especímenes de cada grupo se sumergieron en una solución de café. Las mediciones de color se evaluaron a partir de especímenes teñidos y no teñidos antes y después del cepillado con un espectrofotómetro. La rugosidad de la superficie de cada muestra sin teñir se analizó utilizando un perfilómetro después del cepillado y del clareamiento. La superficie de un espécimen seleccionado al azar de cada grupo se observó utilizando un microscopio electrónico de barrido (MEB). El análisis estadístico del cambio de color se realizó utilizando la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. Se utilizó el ANOVA para evaluar la rugosidad de la superficie. El grupo III proporcionó una recuperación significativamente mayor en los valores de ΔE00 que otros grupos en el esmalte no teñido (p<0,05). El Grupo IV mostró significativamente los valores más altos de ΔE00 en el esmalte teñido (p<0.05) y también el Grupo IV mostró los valores más altos de rugosidad superficial (p<0.05), el análisis en MEB reveló una superficie más irregular en los grupos III y IV. Se puede afirmar que el dentífrico que contiene azul es una forma efectiva y segura de proporcionar dientes más claros con el cepillado de rutina en el hogar.

ABSTRACT

Objective @# The polishing effects of different compositions of chairside polishing systems on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) were compared to provide a reference for the rational selection of polishing systems for this material in clinical settings. @*Methods @#A total of 108 specimens were made from ShushijieTMPEEK crown and bridge materials, Bio-PAEK® dental PEEK, and BioHPP® PEEK. Thirty-six specimens of each material were randomly divided into 6 groups on average based on their polishing technique: OptiDisc®, Super-Snap® Rainbow Technique Kit, VITA ENAMIC®Clinical Polishing Set, Sof-LexTM Diamond Polishing System, Visio.lign Finishing Kit for Composite Veneers, and CERAMAGE Polishing Kit, LavaTM Ultimate ceramic and VITA ENAMIC ceramics were set as the control groups, and 6 specimens were made in each material, polished by Sof-LexTM Diamond Polishing System and VITA ENAMIC® Polishing Set clinical, respectively, according to the manufacturers’ suggestions. The surface roughness (Ra value and Sa value) and gloss of each set were measured. The surface morphologies of the polished specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy.@*Results @#Surface roughness (Ra value and Sa value) and gloss were mainly influenced by the type of polishing system, and they varied between PEEK material types. The Sof-LexTM Diamond Polishing System produced the highest surface roughness and the lowest gloss values for PEEK materials, while the Super-Snap® Rainbow Technique Kit, Visio.lign Finishing Kit for Composite Veneers and CERAMAGE Polishing Kit resulted in low surface roughness values. The Visio.lign Finishing Kit for Composite Veneers and CERAMAGE Polishing Kit exhibited high gloss values. Polishing paste particles were observed embedded on the surfaces of the PEEK materials polished by the Visio.lign Finishing Kit for Composite Veneers; the surfaces of specimens polished by the CERAMAGE Polishing Kit were smooth, without polishing paste particle residue. Using the same polishing system, the best polishing results were obtained with BioHPP® among the PEEK materials tested. The surface roughness values of the three tested PEEK materials polished by the CERAMAGE Polishing Kit were similar to those of the LavaTM Ultimate ceramic and VITA ENAMIC ceramic, but the gloss was higher than that of both. @*Conclusion @# CERAMAGE Polishing Kit was recommended for polishing all three tested PEEK materials, achieving a good polishing effect, with similar surface roughness and higher gloss characteristics comparable to those of polished computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin-matrix ceramics.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of gastric acid on the surface roughness and biofilm formation of bulk-fill composite resins. Twenty-seven samples of each composite resin were obtained: G1: Filtek Z250 XT (Z250), G2: Filtek Bulk Fill (FTK), G3: Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (TTC), and G4: Aura Bulk Fill (AUR). The samples were quantitatively analyzed for surface roughness (Ra) using a roughness tester (n=15) and for biofilm formation (Cn) by the counting of colony-forming units (CFUs/mL) (n=9) in three different moments: after polishing (Ra0 and Cn0), after gastric acid immersion (Ra1 and Cn1), and after gastric acid and simulated tooth brushing (Ra2 and Cn2). Qualitative analysis through surface topography (n=3) was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Ra values were subjected to two-way repeated measures ANOVA, followed by Tukey's test. Cn values were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis analysis, followed by multiple comparisons analysis (α=0.05). Z250 and FTK showed significant increases in surface roughness at Ra1. There were fewer CFUs/mL on TTC and AUR in relation to those of Z250 and FTK for Cn0, Cn1 and Cn2. The SEM images showed that gastric acid increased the formation of cracks, exposure of fillers and micro cavities for all composite resins. After tooth brushing, the topographical changes were more evident but did not influence biofilm formation. The gastric acid promoted both degradation of the surfaces and bacterial adhesion for all composite resins.


Resumo O objetivo deste estudo in vitro foi avaliar o efeito do ácido gástrico na rugosidade superficial e na formação do biofilme nas resinas compostas de incremento único. Vinte e sete amostras de cada resina composta foram confeccionadas: G1: Filtek Z250 XT (Z250), G2: Filtek Bulk Fill (FTK), G3: Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (TTC), and G4: Aura Bulk Fill (AUR). As amostras foram analisadas quantitativamente quanto à rugosidade da superfície (Ra) usando um rugosímetro (n=15) e para formação de biofilme (Cn) pela contagem de unidades formadoras de colônias (UFC/mL) (n=9) em três diferentes momentos: após polimento (Ra0 and Cn0), após imersão em ácido gástrico (Ra1 and Cn1), e após ácido gástrico e simulação de escovação (Ra2 and Cn2). Análise qualitative da topografia superficial (n=3) foi avaliada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os valores de Ra foram analisados pela ANOVA de duas vias para amostras pareadas, seguido do teste de Tukey. Os valores de Cn foram submetidos ao teste de Kruskal-Wallis, seguido da análise de comparações múltiplas (α=0,05). Z250 e FTK tiveram aumento significativo na rugosidade superficial em Ra1. Houve menos CFUs/mL para TTC e AUR em relação à Z250 e FTK em Cn0, Cn1 and Cn2. As imagens em MEV mostraram que o ácido gástrico aumentou a formação de fendas, exposição das partículas e mcrocavidades para todas as resinas compostas. Após escovação, as mudanças topográficas foram mais evidentes, mas não influenciou na formação do biofilme. O ácido gástrico promoveu degradação da superfície e adesão bacteriana para todas as resinas compostas.

Abstract Surface changes of restorative materials after bleaching have clinical importance in terms of the durability and survival of restorations. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of home bleaching on the surface roughness, microhardness, and surface analysis of four different types of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials. Specimens were prepared from composite resin (Brilliant Crios: BC), resin nanoceramic (Lava Ultimate: LU), polymerinfiltrated ceramic-network (Vita Enamic: VE), and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic (Vita Suprinity: VS) CAD/CAM materials. Specimens were polished using 800, 1000, 1200, and 2000 grit SiC papers. Each restorative material was randomly divided into two groups; control and bleaching (n=10). The 16% carbamide peroxide bleaching agent (Whiteness Perfect 16%, FGM) was applied to the specimens for 4 h/ day for 14 days. Surface roughness values (Ra) were obtained using a profilometer, and microhardness values (VHN) were obtained using a Vickers microhardness test. Surface analysis of specimens was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Data were analyzed Two-way ANOVA and Fishers Least Significant Difference (LSD) test (p<0.05). After bleaching, the surface roughness of BC (p<0.001) and VE (p<0.032) significantly increased. Bleaching did not significantly affect the microhardness of CAD/CAM materials. SEM evaluation showed material-dependent surface damages after bleaching procedures. The effect of 16% carbamide peroxide home bleaching agent on surface roughness and microhardness of chairside CAD/CAM materials is material-dependent. Before bleaching, restorative materials should be protected by applying a protective barrier and contact with the bleaching agent should be minimized. Also, after bleaching, the restoration surface should be carefully inspected, and re-polishing might be beneficial.


Resumen Los cambios en la superficie de los materiales de restauración tras el blanqueamiento tienen importancia clínica en cuanto a la durabilidad y supervivencia de las restauraciones. Este estudio tenía como objetivo evaluar el efecto del blanqueamiento en casa sobre la rugosidad de la superficie, la microdureza y el análisis de la superficie de cuatro tipos diferentes de materiales de diseño asistido por computadora y fabricación asistida por computadora (CAD/CAM). Se prepararon especímenes de materiales CAD/CAM de resina compuesta (Brilliant Crios: BC), de nanocerámica de resina (Lava Ultimate: LU), de cerámica en red infiltrada por polímeros (Vita Enamic: VE) y de cerámica de vidrio de silicato de litio reforzada con circonio (Vita Suprinity: VS). Las muestras se pulieron con papeles de SiC de grano 800, 1000, 1200 y 2000. Cada material de restauración se dividió aleatoriamente en dos grupos: control y blanqueo (n=10). El agente blanqueador de peróxido de carbamida al 16% (Whiteness Perfect 16%, FGM) se aplicó a las muestras durante 4 h/día durante 14 días. Los valores de rugosidad de la superficie (Ra) se obtuvieron utilizando un perfilómetro, y los valores de microdureza (VHN) se obtuvieron utilizando una prueba de microdureza Vickers. El análisis de la superficie de las muestras se evaluó mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM) y espectroscopia de rayos X de energía dispersiva (EDX). Los datos se analizaron mediante ANOVA de dos vías y la prueba de diferencia mínima significativa (LSD) de Fisher (p<0,05). Tras el blanqueamiento, la rugosidad de la superficie del CB (p<0,001) y del VE (p<0,032) aumentó significativamente. El blanqueamiento no afectó significativamente a la microdureza de los materiales CAD/CAM. La evaluación SEM mostró daños superficiales dependientes del material después de los procedimientos de blanqueo. El efecto del agente blanqueador casero de peróxido de carbamida al 16% sobre la rugosidad de la superficie y la microdureza de los materiales CAD/CAM en el sillón depende del material. Antes del blanqueamiento, los materiales de restauración deben protegerse aplicando una barrera protectora y debe minimizarse el contacto con el agente blanqueador. Además, después del blanqueamiento, la superficie de la restauración debe inspeccionarse cuidadosamente y puede ser beneficioso volver a pulirla.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Vital bleaching of teeth is associated with mineral loss and surface roughness leading to hypersensitivity. Aesthetic restorations are recommended after one week. Search is on for a suitable remineralizing material, which helps in instant adhesive bonding. Hence objective of the study is to evaluate the remineralizing efficacy of two concentrations of Silica doped Nanohydroxyapatite on bleached enamel. Methods: Enamel surfaces of 30 extracted human central incisors were divided into Part A: Unbleached enamel, Part B: Bleached enamel, Part C: Remineralized enamel. The samples were randomly divided into, Group 1: MI Paste Plus (Recaldent, USA), Group 2 and 3 for application of Dentin bonding agents (Tetric- n-bond, Ivoclar, Vivadent) mixed 0.2% and 0.8% Silica doped Nanohydroxyapatite (Sigma Aldrich, Bangalore, India). Post bleaching remineralizing agents were applied on part C. Surface roughness was evaluated with contact stylus profilometer and mineral content was evaluated with Energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy for three parts. Data were analysed using ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey test with p ≤ 0.05. Results: Surface roughness values (Ra) were increased, and mineral loss (Ca:P) was observed after bleaching. After application of remineralizing agents, surface roughness was decreased with no significant value (p > 0.05) and a significant increase in mineral content of all three groups with a p < 0.05 was observed. Conclusion: Application of dentin bonding agent mixed with Silica doped Nanohydroxyapatite decreased surface roughness and improved remineralization of bleached enamel.

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the effect of polishing on surface roughness, gloss and optimum polishing time of various computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorative materials and to provide a proper polishing procedure for dental clinicians.@*METHODS@#Five CAD/CAM restorative materials including vita mark Ⅱ (VM), vita enamic (VE), lava ultimate (LU), shofu block HC (SB) and brilliant crios (BC) were selected. Six specimens were prepared for each material. The specimen was fixed on a custom-made polishing apparatus and sequentially polished with Sof-Lex poli-shing disk system including medium disk (with abrasive particle sizes of 10-40 μm), fine disk (with abrasive particle sizes of 3-9 μm) and superfine disk (with abrasive particle sizes of 1-7 μm). Surface roughness (Ra value) and gloss value were measured every 10 seconds until the numerical values were no longer changed. Then the surface roughness, gloss value and polishing time were recorded and the specimen was moved to the next sequence of polishing. Finally, statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 24.0.@*RESULTS@#For all the restorative materials, the Ra values were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) and the gloss values were significantly increased (P < 0.05) after sequentially polishing with Sof-Lex disks. No significant difference was detected among Ra values of all the tested materials (P>0.05) after sequential polishing. The gloss values of LU [(68.1±4.5) GU] and BC [(68.2±5.8) GU] were significantly higher than those of VE [(48.1±8.1) GU] and BC [(53.2±5.8) GU], P < 0.05. To obtain optimal surface smoothness, VM cost the shortest polishing time [40 (30, 55) s] among all the restorative materials (P < 0.05). No significant differences in the total polishing time were observed among VE [140 (135, 145) s], LU [130 (120, 140) s], SB [140 (130, 150) s] and BC [130 (120, 140) s], P>0.05.@*CONCLUSION@#The surface roughness of all CAD/CAM restorative materials were decreased after sequentially polishing with Sof-Lex disk system. To obtain the smoothest surface, different types of restorative materials might need different polishing times using Sof-Lex polishing disk system. For ceramic restorative material VM, we recommend polishing only with medium disk for 40 s. For hybrid restorative material VE and composite restorative material LU, SB and BC, we recommend polishing with medium disk, fine disk and superfine disk in sequence for 130-140 s in total.

ABSTRACT

Cartilage surface fibrosis is an early sign of osteoarthritis and cartilage surface damage is closely related to load. The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between cartilage surface roughness and load. By applying impact, compression and fatigue loads on fresh porcine articular cartilage, the rough value of cartilage surface was measured at an interval of 10 min each time and the change rule of roughness before and after loading was obtained. It was found that the load increased the roughness of cartilage surface and the increased value was related to the load size. The time of roughness returning to the initial condition was related to the load type and the load size. The impact load had the greatest influence on the roughness of cartilage surface, followed by the severe fatigue load, compression load and mild fatigue load. This article provides reference data for revealing the pathogenesis of early osteoarthritis and preventing and treating articular cartilage diseases.

ABSTRACT: CAD/CAM blocks are widely used in dental restorations around the world. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different polishing and finishing systems on surface roughness and color change of resin-based CAD/CAM blocks. In this study, material samples of 2×7×12mm were prepared. In three different experimental groups, surface polishing was carried out with one-step, two-step and multi-step polishing systems. The samples in one subgroup of each experimental group were polished with the diamond paste. Once the initial roughness and color values of the samples were measured using a profilometer and a spectrophotometer, the samples were immersed in coffee. Surface roughness and color change (ΔE00) results were statistically analyzed using two-way variance analysis (ANOVA). Finishing and polishing systems created significantly different levels of surface roughness on the hybrid ceramic block (Vita Enamic) but not on the composites block (Brilliant Crios, Grandio Blocs). While the two-step and multi-step finishing and polishing systems produced the lowest color change on hybrid ceramic blocks, one-step and two-step systems achieved this on composite blocks (p<0.05). In all test groups, the supplementary polishing performed after regular polishing procedures helped us reduce the surface roughness and color change on CAD/CAM blocks. The findings obtained in this study suggest that one and two-step polishing systems are more suitable for resin-based composite CAD/CAM blocks; for hybrid ceramic CAD/CAM blocks, on the other hand, two and multi-step finishing and polishing systems seem to be more efficient concerning lower surface roughness and resistance to color changes.


RESUMEN: Los bloques CAD/CAM son ampliamente utilizados en las restauraciones dentales, alrededor del mundo. El objetivo de este estudio es investigar los efectos de diferentes sistemas de pulido y acabado sobre la rugosidad de la superficie y el cambio de color de los bloques CAD/CAM de resina. En este estudio se prepararon muestras de material de 2×7×12mm. El pulido de la superficie se llevó a cabo en tres grupos experimentales con sistemas de pulido de un paso, de dos pasos y de varios pasos. Las muestras de un subgrupo de cada grupo experimental se pulieron con la pasta de diamante. Una vez medidos los valores iniciales de rugosidad y color de las muestras mediante un perfilómetro y un espectrofotómetro, las muestras se sumergieron en café. Los resultados de la rugosidad superficial y el cambio de color (ΔE00) se analizaron estadísticamente mediante un análisis de varianza de dos vías (ANOVA). Los sistemas de acabado y pulido crearon niveles de rugosidad superficial significativamente diferentes en el bloque cerámica híbrida (Vita Enamic) pero no en el bloque de composites (Brilliant Crios, Grandio Blocs). Mientras que los sistemas de acabado y pulido de dos y varios pasos produjeron el menor cambio de color en los bloques de cerámica híbrida, los sistemas de un paso y dos pasos lo consiguieron en los bloques de composite (p<0,05). En todos los grupos de prueba, el pulido suplementario realizado después de los procedimientos de pulido regulares nos ayudó a reducir la rugosidad de la superficie y el cambio de color en los bloques CAD/CAM. Los hallazgos obtenidos en este estudio sugieren que los sistemas de pulido de uno y dos pasos son más adecuados para los bloques CAD/CAM de resina; en cambio, para los bloques CAD/CAM de cerámica híbrida, los sistemas de acabado y pulido de dos y varios pasos parecen ser más eficientes en lo que respecta a la menor rugosidad de la superficie y la resistencia a los cambios de color.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of the present in vivo study was to evaluate the bacterial contamination of sports mouthguards, surface roughness, and the efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate spray in the disinfection of these devices. A randomized, blinded cross-over clinical trial was performed with twenty 9 to 13 years old children who practiced martial arts and participated in all phases of the study. They were instructed to wear mouthguards 3 alternated days a week for 1 hour and, after use, to spray sterile tap water or chlorhexidine 0.12%. The mouthguards were analyzed by MTT assay, Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization, and confocal laser microscopy prior and after use for 2 weeks. Data were analyzed by Wilcoxon and t-Student, and Pearson correlation tests, with 5% significance level. Were observed that mouthguards of the control group were more contaminated with cariogenic microorganisms than those of the chlorhexidine group (p<0.05). The mouthguards use of spray of chlorhexidine reduced significantly the bacteria contamination compared with control group (p = 0.007). The surface roughness of the mouthguards increased significantly after use, irrespective of application of chlorhexidine spray. A moderate correlation (r=0.59) was observed between surface roughness and the cariogenic microorganism's contamination only for control group. Sports mouthguards had intense microbial contamination and increased surface roughness after its use. The use of chlorhexidine spray was effective for reducing the mouthguards contamination used by children.


Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo in vivo foi avaliar a contaminação bacteriana de protetores bucais esportivos, a rugosidade da superfície e a eficácia do spray de gluconato de clorexidina na desinfecção desses dispositivos. Um ensaio clínico randomizado, cego, cruzado foi realizado com vinte crianças de 9 a 13 anos, que praticavam artes marciais, participaram de todas as fases do estudo. As crianças foram orientadas a usar o protetor bucal por 3 dias alternados durante 1 hora e, após o uso, borrifar água de torneira estéril ou clorexidina 0,12%. Os protetores foram analisados por ensaio MTT, Hibridização DNA-DNA e microscopia confocal a laser antes e após o uso por 2 semanas. Os dados foram analisados pelos teste de Wilcoxon, teste t de Student, e correlação de Pearson, com nível de significância de 5%. Observou-se que os protetores bucais do grupo controle estavam mais contaminados com microrganismos cariogênicos do que os do grupo experimental (clorexidina) (p <0,05). O uso de protetores bucais com spray de clorexidina reduziu significativamente a contaminação bacteriana em relação ao grupo controle (p = 0,007). A rugosidade da superfície dos protetores bucais aumentou significativamente após o uso, independentemente da aplicação de spray de clorexidina. Uma correlação moderada (r = 0,59) foi observada entre a rugosidade da superfície e a contaminação do micro-organismo apenas para o grupo controle. Os protetores bucais esportivos apresentam intensa contaminação microbiana e aumento da rugosidade superficial após o uso. O uso de spray de clorexidina foi eficaz para reduzir a contaminação dos protetores bucais usados por crianças.

ABSTRACT@#High viscous glass ionomer cement (HVGIC) was recently developed for atraumatic restorative treatment (ART). However, its moisture sensitivity remains a limitation thus protective coating application is recommended. This study investigated the effect of resin coating on the surface roughness and microhardness of two HVGICs (Riva Self Cure HVGIC [RV] and Equia® Forte Fil [EQ]) conditioned in food-simulating liquids (FSLs). Fifty standard disc-shaped samples were fabricated using customised stainless-steel mould (10 × 2 mm). Coating was applied on top surface of all samples and subsequently divided into five groups: air (control), distilled water, 0.02 N citric acid, heptane and 50% ethanol-water solution. The samples were conditioned in FSLs at 37°C for seven days. Subsequently, the surface roughness and microhardness of samples were measured using optical profilometry and microhardness tester, respectively. SEM analysis was done for qualitative observation of surface morphological changes. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA and posthoc Tukey’s test (α = 0.05). Interestingly, the results revealed that surface roughness was significantly influenced by FSLs immersion, presence of coating and the materials itself (p < 0.001). The lowest surface roughness was found on control coated samples: RV (50.98±4.25) nm and EQ (62.77±3.92) nm, while the highest values seen on uncoated surfaces in citric acid: RV (505.26±31.10) nm and EQ (350.33±15.36) nm. RV samples had the lowest microhardness of 54.97±2.48 Vickers hardness number (VHN) post-immersion in citric acid. In conclusion, with the exception of RV conditioned in heptane and ethanol, the uncoated HVGICs generally had higher surface roughness than the coated HVGICs. HVGICs conditioned in citric acid showed the most significant increase in surface roughness and reduction in microhardness.

Introduction: Enamel microabrasion is achieved by abrasion of the enamel surface and it is a quick, practical and efficient procedure. Objective It was assessed the weight loss and surface aspect of enamel after microabrasion procedures with commercial and mixtures made in-office. Material and method Eighty bovine incisors were divided into four groups (n=10): OpalustreTM (6.6% HCl + silicon carbide); Whiteness RMTM (6% HCl + silicon carbide); 37% H3PO4 + pumice and 10% HCl + pumice. Treatment was performed by 15 applications of 10s duration. The enamel weight loss was determined by the difference in weight before and after the microabrasion. The surfaces were analyzed by a surface roughness equipment and scanning electron microscopy. Data were submitted to paired-T test, one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). Result It was observed significantly weight loss for all groups. The difference in weight loss ranged from 0.037±0.012 for group 37% H3PO4 and from 0.054±0.009 for group 6,6% HCl. There was a significant increase in surface roughness for all groups and 10% HCl group showed the lower results (0.65±0.09). It was observed different patterns of enamel morphology by SEM images. Conclusion The in-office mixtures resulted in the lowest enamel structure loss (37% H3PO4) and the lowest surface roughness (10% HCl).


Introdução: A microabrasão do esmalte é realizada através da abrasão da superfície do mesmo, apresentando-se como um procedimento rápido, prático e eficiente. Objetivo Avaliar a perda de peso e o aspecto superficial do esmalte após procedimentos de microabrasão com agentes comerciais e não comerciais. Material e método Oitenta incisivos bovinos foram divididos em quatro grupos (n = 10): OpalustreTM (6,6% HCl + carboneto de silício); Whiteness RMTM (6% HCl + carboneto de silício); 37% H3PO4 + pedra-pomes e 10% HCl + pedra-pomes. O tratamento foi realizado em 15 aplicações de 10s de duração. A perda de peso do esmalte foi determinada pela diferença de peso antes e depois da microabrasão. As superfícies foram analisadas por equipamento de rugosidade superficial e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste T-pareado, ANOVA one-way e teste de Tukey (α = 0,05). Resultado Foi observada perda de peso significativa para todos os grupos, a diferença na perda de peso variou de -0,037±0,012 para o grupo 37% H3PO4 a -0.054±0.009 para o grupo 6.6% HCl. Houve um aumento significativo na rugosidade da superfície para todos os grupos e o grupo 10%HCl apresentou os resultados mais baixos (0,65±0,09). Foram observados diferentes padrões de morfologia do esmalte por meio de imagens MEV. Conclusão Os agentes não comerciais resultaram na menor perda de estrutura do esmalte (37% H3PO4) e na rugosidade superficial (10% HCl).

Objective: TThe study evaluated in vitro the changes in roughness, color stability, and bacterial count of a CAD/CAM Resin Nano-Ceramic material surface treated by various scaling procedures. Material and Methods: 70 disks (5mm diameter, 0.5 mm thickness) of Resin Nano-Ceramic (Lava ™Ultimate, 3M, ESPE) material were cemented in standardized cavities prepared in bovine teeth. A custom-made scaling apparatus of a double pan balance was used for different scaling methods, simulating standard clinical conditions. The specimens were assigned to three main groups: no scaling(C), ultrasonic scaling (U), and manual scaling (M). Each group was then divided into three subgroups according to scaling tip material; stainless steel tip (St), plastic tip (P), and titanium tip (Ti). The surface texture was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with a tactile profilometer and atomic force microscopy. A spectrophotometer was used for color measurement. Streptococcus mutans were counted in a colony counter. All the data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results: Two-way ANOVA was used to study the effect while One-way ANOVA was performed to compare between study groups. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. The ultrasonic titanium tip(UTi) revealed the significant highest mean value of alterations (p < 0.001). The integrity of the material surface was altered in the form of deep scratches on the ultrasonically scaled surfaces and numerous smaller scratches on the hand-scaled surfaces. Conclusion: The plastic instrument would appear to be the instrument of choice during a routine maintenance procedure for Resin Nano-Ceramic materials (AU).


Objetivo: Este estudo avaliou in vitro as alterações na rugosidade, estabilidade de cor e quantidade de bactérias da superfície de uma resina nano-cerâmica produzida em CAD/CAM tratada por diferentes procedimentos de raspagem. Material e Métodos: 70 discos (5 mm diâmetro, 0,5 espessura) de resina nano-cerâmica (Lava ™Ultimate, 3M, ESPE) foram cimentadas em cavidades padronizadas preparadas em dentes bovinos. Um aparato customizado de raspagem com pratos duplos de balança foram usados para os diferentes métodos de raspagem, simulando uma condição clínica padronizada. Os espécimes foram distribuídos em três principais grupos: Sem raspagem (C), raspagem ultrassônica (U) e raspagem manual (M). Cada grupo foi dividido em três subgrupos de acordo com a ponta do material de raspagem; ponta de aço inoxidável (St), ponta plástica (P), ponta de titânio (Ti). A textura da superfície foi analisada qualitativamente e quantitativamente por um perfilômetro tátil e microscopia de força atômica. Um espectrofotometro foi usado para a mensuração da cor. Estreptococos mutans foram contados em um contador de colônias. Todos os dados foram tabulados e analisados estatisticamente. Resultados: Anova dois fatores foi utilizado para estudar os efeitos, enquanto ANOVA um fator foi utilizado para comparar os grupos experimentais. O nível de significância foi estabelecido em p≤ 0,05. A ponta de ultrassom de titânio (UTi) revelou o valor significante mais alto de alterações (p < 0,001). A integridade da superfície d matérias foi alterada na forma ranhuras profundas, nas superfícies raspada por ultrassom e numerosas ranhuras menores nas superfícies raspadas à mão. Conclusão: O instrumento plástico poderia apresentar-se como um instrumento de escolha durante o pocedimento de manutenção routineira para materiais de resina nano-ceramica. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Avoiding biofilm formation on dentures is associated with maintaining the surface properties of acrylic-based dentures. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of two different cleaning agents (Corega and Klorhex 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate) on surface roughness of the denture regarding efficacy of curing procedures. A total of sixty disc-shaped specimens were prepared with two different methods as long and short curing processes. The specimens were divided into subgroups according to the immersion solutions (distilled water, Corega tablet group and Klorhex 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate group) (n=10). The samples were kept in a solution for 8 hours per day during a month. The average Ra1 (before exposure to the cleanser agent) and Ra2 (after exposure to the cleanser agent) of each sample was measured. A two- way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test was used for statistical analysis. The solutions significantly increased the Ra values in both acrylic groups (p0.05). The long-term curing time is highly effective in decreasing the surface roughness of the acrylic base material.


Resumen Evitar la formación de biopelículas en las prótesis dentales se asocia con el mantenimiento de las propiedades de la superficie de las prótesis de base acrílica. El objetivo del estudio es investigar los efectos de dos agentes de limpieza diferentes (Corega y Klorhex 0,2% gluconato de clorhexidina) en la rugosidad de la superficie de la dentadura postiza en cuanto a la eficacia de los procedimientos de curado. Se prepararon un total de sesenta muestras en forma de disco con dos métodos diferentes como procesos de curado largos y cortos. Las muestras se dividieron en subgrupos según las soluciones de inmersión (agua destilada, grupo de pastillas Corega y grupo de gluconato de clorhexidina al 0,2%) (n=10). Las muestras se mantuvieron en una solución durante 8 horas al día durante un mes. Se midió el promedio de Ra1 (antes de la exposición al agente de limpieza) y Ra2 (después de la exposición al agente de limpieza) de cada muestra. Para el análisis estadístico se utilizó un ANOVA de dos vías y una prueba post hoc de Tukey. Las soluciones aumentaron significativamente los valores de Ra en ambos grupos acrílicos (p 0,05). El tiempo de curado a largo plazo es muy eficaz para disminuir la rugosidad de la superficie del material de base acrílica.

Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a resistência ao desgaste de dentes em acrílico para próteses contendo nanopartículas de dióxido de silício (nano-SiO2 ) e dióxido de alumínio (nanoAl2 O3 ). Material e Métodos: O material em polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA) foi utilizado para fabricar 84 amostras (n=10) contendo nano-SiO2 e nano-Al2 O3 nas concentrações 0,1% em peso, 0,3% em peso e 0,5% em peso de pó acrílico. Uma máquina de teste de desgaste de dois corpos e um microscópio digital foram usados para medir as mudanças na perda de peso e rugosidade da superfície, respectivamente. Testes de ANOVA a um fator e testes de comparações múltiplas de Tukey foram utilizados para análise dos dados (α = 0,05). Resultados: O material modificado com nano-SiO2 demonstrou um aumento significativo na perda de peso em comparação com o material acrílico artificial convencional (p ˂ 0,05) enquanto o material modificado com nano-Al2 O3 demonstrou aumento não significativo na perda de peso, exceto no subgrupo 0,5% (p < 0,05). Não há diferenças significativas em relação à alteração da rugosidade após a simulação de desgaste entre todos os grupos testados (p > 0,05). Conclusão: As nanopartículas de nano-Al2 O3 exibem menos efeito negativo que o nanoSiO2 , podendo ser usado com cautela, se necessário. (AU)


Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the wear resistance of acrylic denture teeth containing silicon dioxide (nano-SiO2 ) and aluminum dioxide (nano-Al2 O3 ) nanoparticles. Material and Methods: Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture tooth material was used to denture tooth material was used to fabricate 84 specimens (n=10) containing nano-SiO2 and nano-Al2 O3 in concentrations 0.1wt%, 0.3wt%, and 0.5wt% of acrylic powder. A two-body wear testing machine and digital microscope were used to measure the changes in weight loss and surface roughness respectively. One-way ANOVA and pair-wise Tukey's post-hoc tests were used for data analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Nano-SiO2 modified teeth material demonstrated a significant increase in weight loss in comparison conventional artificial acrylic teeth material (p ˂ 0.05) while nanoAl2 O3 modified teeth material demonstrated non-significant increase in weight loss except for 0.5% subgroup (p ˂ 0.05). There is no significant differences regarding roughness change after wear simulation among all tested groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Nano-Al2 O3 nanoparticles exhibit less negative effect than nano-SiO2 so; it could be used with caution if necessary. (AU)

@#This study compared the surface roughness of selected tooth coloured restorative materials that were polished according to manufacturers’ instructions and Sof-Lex. It also assessed the surface roughness of polished materials after thermocycling. Filtek Z350XT, Beautifil-Bulk Restorative and Cention N, were used in this study. A stainless steel mould (10mm diameter x 2mm height) was used to fabricate 75 cylindrical specimens: 15 Filtek Z350XT (FZ), 30 Beautifil-Bulk Restorative (BB) and 30 Cention N (CN). All 15 FZ specimens were polished with Sof-Lex. Fifteen BB and CN specimens were polished according to manufacturers’ instructions. The remaining fifteen BB and CN specimens were polished using Sof-Lex. All the specimens were subjected to thermocycling (1000 cycles). Surface roughness was assessed quantitatively with profilometry after specimen preparation (Mylar stage), polishing and thermocycling. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25.0 at α=0.05. When polished according to manufacturers’ instructions, BB had the lowest mean surface roughness (Ra) values (0.13±0.01μm) followed sequentially by CN (0.14±0.03μm) and FZ (0.15±0.02μm). The differences were not statistically significant. When polished with Sof-Lex, BB exhibited the smoothest surface (0.116±0.03μm) followed sequentially by and FZ (0.150±0.02μm) and CN (0.157±0.02μm). Thermocycling caused an increase in the Ra. The differences were statistically significant. All materials tested had Ra values below the threshold value of 0.2 µm at Mylar stage and after polishing with their recommended polishing system and Sof-Lex. Thermocycling produced rougher surfaces that did not exceed the threshold Ra value. Polishability was material dependent.

@#Introduction: Y-TZP Zirconia is a ceramic used for dental implants because it has good biocompatibility and aesthetic properties, and it is affordable. Y-TZP formed from powder using uniaxial pressing with some added binder. The binders used are PVA, PEG and a combination of both. This combination reduce hardness and improve plasticity properties. Significantly increasing of the binder concentration and the surface roughness of the implant increases the porosity of the material as a place for the osseointegration process. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the different effect of PVA-PEG binders on the surface roughness of Y-TZP zirconia. Methods: Twelve samples were divided into three treatment groups: 100% PVA, 100% PEG and 4% PVA-PEG added to Y-TZP powder at a ratio of 95:5 (wt.%). The mixture was pressed using a uniaxial pressing machine, sintered and measured: the data was then analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD. Results: The result of the ANOVA showed that there were significant differences in the surface roughness of the Y-TZP with three different binders (P<0.05). The average surface roughness of the three binders are as follows: PVA 100% (0.8025±0.23472), PEG 100% (1.2325±0.23866), 4% of PVA-PEG (1.3450±0.27695). The LSD showed that there was significant differences between PVA 100% and PEG 100% (P<0.05), PVA 100% and 4% PVA-PEG (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between PEG 100% and 4% PVA-PEG (P>0.05). Conclusion: 4% PVA-PEG binders combination has effects on the surface roughness of Y-TZP zirconia

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to develop a customized polishing protocol using standard zirconia polishing kit with polishers of different grit and to study their effect on the surface roughness of zirconia and compare it to that of laboratory polished zirconia samples and machine polished titanium implant abutments. Methods: The samples used in this study were 15 zirconia blocks and 10 machine polished titanium implant abutments (5 Biohorizon and 5 MIS). The 15 zirconia blocks were again divided into three groups. The first group consisted of 5 zirconia samples polished by customised polishing protocol (coarse + medium+ fine). The second group consisted of 5 zirconia samples which were sent to lab1 which used Komet company burs and 5 zirconia samples were sent to lab2 which used carborundum burs and sandpaper for polishing. The fourth group consisted of 5 machine polished titanium implants from MIS system and fifth group consisted of 5 machine polished titanium implants from Biohorizon system. After polishing, the mean surface roughness values (Ra) of zirconia samples and titanium implant abutments were calculated quantitatively by optical profilometer and qualitatively by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: The mean surface roughness value of customised polishing protocol using coarse+medium+fine polisher was 0.11 µm which was almost equal to the mean surface roughness values of lab1 polished zirconia samples - 0.131 µm and that of machine polished titanium implant abutments –Biohorizon: 0.201 µm MIS: 0.0859 µm and was within the optimal range of 0.2µm. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study it was concluded that, the mean surface roughness values of zirconia samples polished by customised polishing protocol , lab1 polished samples and machine polished titanium implant abutments were found to be similar & closer to the critical Ra values (0.2µm) suggesting that the chairside polishing of zirconia can be carried out using the customized polishing technique

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the surface composition, roughness, and relative friction of metal clips from various ceramic self-ligating brackets. METHODS: Six kinds of brackets were examined. The control group (mC) consisted of interactive metal self-ligating brackets while the experimental group (CC, EC, MA, QK, and WA) consisted of interactive ceramic self-ligating brackets. Atomic force microscopy-lateral force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to analyze the surface of each bracket clip. RESULTS: All the clips in the experimental groups were coated with rhodium except for the QK clip. The results showed that the QK clip had the lowest average roughness on the outer surface, followed by the MA, EC, WA, and CC clips. However, the CC clip had the lowest average roughness on the inner surface, followed by the QK, WA, MA, and EC clips. The QK clip also had the lowest relative friction on the outer surface, followed by the MA, EC, CC, and WA clips. Likewise, the CC clip had the lowest relative friction on the inner surface, followed by the QK, WA, MA, and EC clips. CONCLUSIONS: The surface roughness and relative friction of the rhodium-coated clips were generally higher than those of the uncoated clips.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of different surface post-etching treatments in flexural strength, contact angle and surface roughness of a lithium disilicate ceramic. Material and Methods: 60 bars (16 x 2 x 4 mm) were divided in six groups (n=10): C, no treatment; HF, hydrofluoric acid for 20 s (HF) + washing (60 s), drying (30s); HFL, HF + washing (60 s), drying (30 s) and luting; HFNL, HF + washing (60 s) + neutralization with sodium bicarbonate (SB) for 40 s + washing (5s), drying (30 s) and luting; HFUL, HF + washing (60 s) + ultrasonic bath (UB) for 4 min, drying (30 s) and luting; HFNUL, HF + washing (60 s) + SB (40 s) + UB (4 min) and luting. The bars were submitted to three-points flexural strength test. 25 ceramic blocks (12 x 7 x 7 mm) were divided into five groups (n=5) to evaluate roughness and contact angle C - no treatment; HF - HF ; HFU - HF and UB for 5 min ; HFN - HF and SB; HFNU - HF, UB and SB. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed the surface of the samples. ANOVA one-way statistical analysis was done for comparison of results. Results: There was no statistical difference for flexural strength (p-value = 0.15) and for surface roughness (p-valor = 0.15). However, it was obtained statistically significant difference for contact angle (p-valor = 0.00). SEM images showed precipitates after the acid etching, which were removed by post-etching treatments. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the different post-etching surface treatments did not increase the flexural strength, surface roughness, but it influenced the ceramic wetting and SEM images (AU)


Objetivo: O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes tratamentos pós-condicionamento na resistência à flexão, ângulo de contato e rugosidade superficial de uma cerâmica de dissilicato de lítio. Material e Métodos: 60 barras (16 x 2 x 4 mm) foram divididas em seis grupos (n = 10): C, sem tratamento; HF, ácido fluorídrico durante 20 s (HF) + lavagem (60 s), secagem (30 s); HFL, lavagem com HF + (60 s), secagem (30 s) e cimentação; HFNL, HF + lavagem (60 s) + neutralização com bicarbonato de sódio (SB) por 40 s + lavagem (5s), secagem (30 s) e cimentação; HFUL, HF + lavagem (60 s) + banho ultrassônico (UB) por 4 min, secagem (30 s) e cimentação; HFNUL, HF + lavagem (60 s) + SB (40 s) + UB (4 min) e cimentação. As barras foram submetidas ao teste de resistência à flexão de três pontos. 25 blocos cerâmicos (12 x 7 x 7 mm) foram divididos em cinco grupos (n = 5) para avaliação da rugosidade superficial e ângulo de contato C - sem tratamento; HF - HF; HFU - HF e UB por 5 min; HFN - HF e SB; HFNU - HF, UB e SB. Um microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV) foi utilizado para análise da superfície das amostras. A análise estatística unidirecional ANOVA-um fator foi realizada para comparação dos resultados. Resultados: Não houve diferença estatística para a resistência à flexão (p-valor = 0,15) e para a rugosidade superficial (p-valor = 0,15). No entanto, obteve-se diferença estatisticamente significante para o ângulo de contato (p-valor = 0,00). Imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura mostraram a formação de precipitados após o ataque ácido, que foram removidos pelos tratamentos pós-condicionamento. Conclusão: Pode-se concluir que os diferentes tratamentos de superfície pós-condicionamento não aumentaram a resistência à flexão, rugosidade da superfície, mas influenciaram na molhabilidade da cerâmica e nas imagens em MEV.(AU)
